The torii gate at the entrance of the shrine represents the boundary between the sacred place inside the shrine and the place where the outside human lives. It is also said to have a role as a barrier to prevent something unclean inside the shrine.
When visiting the shrine and temples and passing through the torii gate, avoid the middle of God and stop by one on the left and right.
